Theory Thursday: Woody's Origin- Answering all the Questions From Toy Story

A while ago I figured out the formula to answer any remaining questions about the series (I.E. why doesn’t Bullseye talk” and “how come Buzz thinks he’s a real space ranger”). There are so many ideas here to explore but the best way I can come up with to explain them all is with a fan-fic. Over the next few weeks, we are going to explore all the ins and outs of Toy Story with helpful explanations along the way. through Woody's origin story.

Welcome to Theory Thursday where we take the hard questions and give them an answer (sometimes we even make up the questions too!)

October 4th, 1957

Bud Luckey is a Pixar Animator
credited with the design of Woody.
the character in this Fan- Fic is in homage
to him.
Sputnik is launched and the space race is on. The entire focus of America was changing from what we have done towards what we can do.

In a factory outside of town is a toymaker named Bud Luckey. He was working on a project he had on his desk when the mail carrier came by. The mailman had a sympathetic look on his face as he handed an envelope to Bud. He walked away.

Bud looked into the envelope and pulled out a letter. He dropped the paper onto the ground.
“Mr. Luckey, due to recent changes within corporate, I am sorry to announce to you the end of the “Woody’s Roundup” line that you have put so many hours into. It is with deep regret to inform you that your department is to be minimalized and moving into a new direction…”

Once the Astronauts went up, children
only wanted to play with space toys.
Bud pulled up a box and started loading his personal tools into the box. As he turned to walk away, an object caught his eye- the last remaining Sheriff Woody doll lying in the trash bin. Bud picked him up and with a glimmer in his eye he placed the toy into the box and walked out the door. As he walked out, he heard one of the managers talking about a Toy named Lunar Larry. “That’ll never fly” he told himself.

A couple months later, Bud shook hands with a realtor in front of an old barn. He walked into the empty barn and placed his briefcase on a barrel, opened it up and pulled the Woody Doll out of it.
“This is where it’s going to begin Woody. All our work is going to come to a point here”.
"I'll tell you what's not fair! Spending eternity
on a dime store shelf watching every other
toy be sold".
Bud placed woody in a sitting position on the barrel and Bud started getting to work.
“this place is going to be a big deal, and something tells me that you are going to amount to be something special my cowboy amigo”

It seems that Woody does understand the
whole shelf life of a toy. In TS2 we see him
go into some kind of personal crisis of his own
mortality when he is placed on the shelf broken
and unwanted.
After a couple weeks, Buds Toy Barn was open to the public. The shelves were stocked with tons of toys from the new line of Combat Carl to the ever-popular Barbie doll. Board games, new electronic toys, and on one shelf sat the sheriff Woody doll. Every so often, Bud would take inventory of the building and every time he did, he saw Woody sitting there untouched on the shelf.

Months passed and Bud saw the cowboy.

“Woody, it looks like you’re not getting out of here anytime soon. I have an idea though.”

Bud took Woody to a local church- led day care. The pastor in charge took the donation gratefully and placed him within the playtime room and closed the door on his way out.

Woody doesn't remember being a part of a
TV show because he was finished after the
series was canceled, effectively
becoming a standard toy rather than an
alternative advertisement for a T.V. show.
Buzz thinks he's real because he is advertisement
for a TV show while Andy's other toys are
genaric playthings unconnected to anything else.
Woody sat up in shock and ran towards the window just in time to see Bud pull out in his car and drive away. Woody looked around him. the room was dismal. And a little empty. Woody hopped off the table that he was on and began to explore. A wiring noise shot from behind him. A small tower of blocks fell over in the distance. Woody ran away from it and bumped into what looked like a group of hobo toys. The toy Woody bumped into directly stood and turned to face him.

Davy Crocket was the franchise
that Woody's Roundup was based
on. Dave went from being the most
popular to being forgotten to becoming
a collecting monument.
The leader of these toys was roughly 12 inches tall. He had a coonskin hat and his clothing was made of leather, although it was worn in many places and a seam had come undone on one of the sleeves. his manufacturing was fairly standard while his head had a childish appearance to it.

“Well look at that! Another westerner. Nice to meet you. my name is Dave. Welcome to happy acres Christian pre-school.”

“look, I don’t know how I got here… what is this place?” asked a very confused Woody.

“Well, I wish I could say that this is a good place, but as you can see, some of us here have had a pretty bad go of it. Here I’ll show you around.”

Why is Woody in a daycare? In TS3 it
seems like Woody has had experience
with daycares with lines like "Daycare
is a sad lonely place for washed up old
toys who have no owners". Thats a line
that comes from experience.
Dave introduced Woody through the different areas of the classroom, explaining that toys who get sent here are usually there because they are unwanted or broken. The only upside is that they do get playtime but it’s kind of like sympathy play time.

Dave stood up at the front of the room.

“alright everyone, time for a staff meeting!” shouted Dave. All of the toys in the room gathered to the front.

“now, a couple of things before we get to the big news, we have started a campaign to spread awareness of plastic corrosion. Some of us are getting kind of old and it’s important that we stay on top of that. Also, keep in mind, those of us who have cloth and plush accessories, that drool has been creating a bad mold and smell problem. Each toy here needs to take a mandatory cleaning at least once each week.”

A moan came from the crowd. These meetings were always really boring and no one seems sure why they have to have them. in Woody’s mind, however, this meeting made a lot of sense. In a relatively dismal and un- centered environment it’s a good thing that there is someone who is immediately in charge of the situation.

“now our big news” continued Dave. “please welcome our newest toy to the group, Sheriff Woody.”

Part 2 to come next Thursday.
