Saturday Showdown- Mario v Kirito

This week has seen two events happen. The first is that Friday this week was Mario Day and Thursday this week (at least where I’m at) was the release of the subtitled version of the Sword Art Online movie. To commemorate, we are placing two very capable gamers against each other to prove once and for all who is superior.

Welcome to Saturday Showdown, where the greatest battles in history happen and where you can help pick the outcome!

Stats:

Mario
Real Name: Mario
Base of Operations: Mushroom Kingdom
Bio: not much is known of Mario’s early life. Some say that he is originally from Brooklyn, however, this is not confirmed in all cases. Mario has worked in several industries from carpentering, medical, archaeologist, and CEO. He is most remembered for his service offered as a plumber between his carpentering and medical careers.

Kirito
Real Name: Kazuto Kirigaya
Base of Operations: physically he lives in Japan. Spent two years in the virtual world of “Sword Art Online”.
Bio: Kazuto retreated himself into his video games and the intriguing world of Virtual Reality. He beta tested a game called “Sword Art Online” which ended up being a trap that kept innocent gamers linked into their nerve-gear headsets, effectively rendering them helpless until someone beat the final level of the game. Kazuto, under his better-known alias of Kirito, Defeated the final boss and everyone was able to go home. Along the way, Kirito met a large group of friends that became his family over that time including his girlfriend Asuna, Best friends Agil and Klein, Lisbeth and several others. He also met a computer program named Yui who is his and Asuna's adopted "daughter" (i'ts a complicated set up).

Since beating SAO, Kirito has worked for the government in a budding Virtual Reality division, requiring him to play and beat multiple games in the name of public safety. Compatible software allows Kirito to keep his same avatar set up between the games he enters.

The Meeting:

Japan- 2025
TV screens all over the country are tuned into the New Year’s party kicking off 2025. After the performers and dancers finished their sets, the president of Nintendo started making his New Year’s announcement: Smash Brothers will now become a nerve-gear compatible game.
Kazuto stood and cheered with all of his friends, who were watching this from the safety of their hangout in the game “Alfheim Online”. Smash Brothers was the game many of these kids grew up on and this could not be more exciting for them.

“I bet you’re looking forward to this game release huh Kirito?” asked Asuna
Starting from left to right we have Yui (bottom left), Strea
(top Left), Asuna, Kirito, Silica, Lisbeth, Leafa, Sinon.

“You know I have! Smash Brothers was probably my favorite game growing up. It looks pretty difficult though. Virtual Reality adds a whole new dimension to the game.” Responded Kirito

“Nothing could beat you daddy!” Yui, in sprite form, landed on Kirito’s shoulder. He gave her a loving smile (like I mentioned. It’s a long story how all these relations happened).

“I hear that Mario is pretty tough this time around. Rumor has it they even saved him as the final boss in this version.” remarked Agil.

“Well, I’ve been invited to play the beta for the game before it’s released this summer, maybe I should try it out?”

Everyone voiced their approval.

“I could even set up a link and we could all watch your gameplay here, but surely no staple game like Smash Bros. could be any kind of challenge the hero of SAO!” chimed Lis.

“Alright then, I’ll do it”.

The next day, Kirito met with the president and R&D of Nintendo. They brought him into what looked like a white hospital room.

“Of course, one of the new features is that your character data that you have accumulated already through the games you have previously played will apply. You will have a trial challenge at the beginning to get your avatar used to the rules of Smash Brothers.” The president pointed towards a young woman in the corner of the room.

“Nurse Jenny here will be keeping track of your vitals, just in case anything does go wrong.” Explained the president.

Nerve-gear feeds into your nervous system
allowing you to smell, touch, and tast as well
as see and hear the game.
Kazuto threw his head back and laughed. The irony of a nurse named Jenny at Nintendo headquarters was just too much.

“I’m sorry, I don’t mean to make fun” said Kirito as he wiped the tears away from his eyes.
“I’m used to it by this point.” Sighed Jenny.

They Hooked Kirito into the monitors and lowered the nerve-gear headset over his eyes.

“Link Start!”

Kirito’s group of friends watched from their house party as Kirito defeated each enemy one by one. Each combo was executed flawlessly and timed at the perfect moment. Each enemy down without hardly a fight.

Kirito set his swords back in their sheaths and wiped the bead of virtual sweat off his forehead. The words “Final Boss” appeared in the air in front of him with an option to continue or retreat. Kirito cracked his knuckles, put his hand in the air and hit the “continue” option. The environment started to morph around him. Sewage pipes spread across the ground and walls. The combined smell of the sewer permeated the arena.

“Not a good idea” thought Kirito. “I’ll have to make a mention of this aspect of the game when I finish this.”

An announcer’s voice boomed around the arena.
“Player One: Kirito!” a fictional audience full of NPC’s cheered.

“And the returning champion, Mario!” the NPC’s cheered louder. A pipe rose from the other end of the arena and out popped the familiar plumber. Kirito dreamed of one day facing his hero in gaming since childhood. This promised to be a fun match

“3…2…1… GO!”

Bonus Trivia question!

First one to comment with the correct answer gets a shout-out and a NO-PRIZE in the conclusion! (Marvel's not using it, so I guess that means I can?)

What was the name of the princess that Mario had to rescue in the original Donkey Kong game?
