Responsibility and the Power to Do it.

There a few quotes as memorable amongst comic book fans as "with great power comes great responsibility". The quote is attributed to Peter Parkers Uncle Ben (although the original quote was said by an un-named narrator and Uncle Ben didn’t actually say it until the 70’s in an audio Spider-man adventure). When I was in church today this quote popped into mind as we were discussing The Brother of Jared.
The brother of Jared (Mahonri- Moriancumer) was given a calling to lead a huge exodus of people out of the old world and across the new world (this story can be found in Ether chapters 1- 6 in The Book of Mormon). During all of this he had to teach people to build a new kind of boat, spiritually teach the people, and also deal with his own problems in his family. Leading a group in that kind of caliber is hard. Fortunately I noticed that the brother of Jared had a few talents that really help him out. The first is that he had an amazing amount of faith, so much faith that God could hold nothing from him (Ether 3: 9-15). I imagine the brother of Jared was also pretty good at studying (he came up with the idea for God to light stones through study. Ether 2:22-25 and 3:1-3) The brother of Jared also had some skill with his hands (Ether 3:1. He made those rocks).
When God asks us to take on a responsibility, he always gives us the power to accomplish those things. As President Thomas S. Monson has taught over and over, “Whom the Lord calls, the Lord Qualifies”. Or as we could say: with great responsibility, there must also come Great power.
