Man of Steel- Taylor Campbell Cut

For this limited series of posts, I will be giving my “remake” of the 2013 movie Man of Steel in preparation for the upcoming movie Batman V. Superman. Much of the movie may remain intact, however certain scenes and characters may run through the editing process. Imbeded in the article will be photos and explanations as to why I'm changing the scene around.
The goal for this project is to see how hard it would be to accomplish 3 things:
  1. lower the rating from a hard PG-13 closer to PG. If you can't feel comfortable bringing kids of any age to a Superman movie and not entertain the Adults at the same time, then you are doing something wrong. this will be accomplished through moral delimas and hard decisions rather than destruction, over the top violence, and swearing (most if not all swearing will be cut)
  2. make the movie more inspiring and hopeful. I was surprised at the negative energy from the movie. we will make it a positive one due to lighting, color, and symbolism as well as the undying Kent family moral backbone.
  3. make the ending scenes less controversial.
Enjoy and be sure to tell me what you think so far in the comments. also know this is not meant to be a full script but a guide to the movie.

do we really need to see a live birth at the beginning of the film?
I don't think so.
We have an opening credits scene where we fly through Krypton and see all of the wonders of such. We then see Laura and Jor-el on a hospital bed similar to what was already in the movie. They are gazing down at a newborn child. Kal-ex, a medical robot, appears

Kal-ex: Good news Mistress Laura and master Jor-el, your son is healthy and Laura’s bio readings are stabilized. You may take your newborn son home. Congratulations.

Kal-ex leaves. Laura and Jor-el look at each other lovingly, happy to have a third member of their family. It’s quite the achievement as well considering that Krypton has not had a natural birth in 4000 years. They decide to name the child Kal.

The science counsel of krypton.

Councilor: this is an unsubstantiated theory and we will not discuss it any longer Jor-el.

Jor-El: my findings and evidence are sound. You know that. You all know that! You have felt the tremors! The crystal volcanos have erupted for the first time in centuries. Krypton is dying.

Councilor: and what do you suggest? We come up with an evacuation plan?

Jor-El: no. it’s too late for Krypton but I can ensure the survival of our species and culture.
This is when General Zod appears and kills a couple council members for disagreeing with Jor-El. Jor-El leaves and promises that he will not get the Kryptonians off planet.

Jor-El is a scientist. he is not violent
so him killing the guards and soldiers is out.
so is the fight between Zod and Jor-El. Zod would kick his butt anyway.
Jor-el Steals the codex skull (the biological blueprint of Kryptonians), inserts it into Kal’s ship (bloodstream) and launches the ship. General Zod, who was waiting outside, fails to retrieve the rocket in time because the Science counsel sent a military squad to stop General Zod. Jor- El and Laura watch as their son is being jettisoned into space. They kiss and mid kiss General Zod kills Jor- El for stealing the codex and losing the ship that Kal- El is in. General Zod is tried (same as the movie) and Laura wishes Kal to create a better world than Krypton as the planet dies around her. In space, Kal’s ship is crashing into….

25 years later (Superman is a bit younger in this re-make as opposed to being 33 in man of steel) we are on a fishing boat. A distress signal is received concerning an oil rig. Clark jumps out of the fishing boat, saves the remaining workers on the rig, helicopter flies away and Clark lands in the water. Same as Snider.

I thought this was one of the more
substantial parts of the film, yet it received
almost no attention. this will be remedied in my cut
First flash back about “focusing on the island”. This will stay but we will also be seeing allusions to it later in the film.

Clark gets out of the water and finds a house by the shore. He knocks on the door. A kind older couple answers the door and see Clark standing in his shredded pants and shirtless. He asks if they have any clothes he can borrow. Clark is let into the house and the following conversation happens:

Woman: you fell off the oil rig off shore and swam here? Do you need help?
Clark: I made sure that the rest of the crew got out before me. They got on a rescue helicopter and I didn’t. I just need to find a phone and let my supervisor know that I’m all right and I need to be picked up.
Man: well, we do have a phone you can use. Here
(Clark calls Martha Kent)
Clark: hey boss, its Jim hawking
On phone Martha: Clark? What’s going on?
Clark: well I just needed to let you know I am ok, I got out of the explosion and I just need to be picked up
Martha on phone: oh Clark, what did you do this time?
Clark: thanks, I’m in Coatesville Oregon. I can take a bus to the airport and catch a flight
Martha on phone: you and your antics Clark.
Why this whole addition? I thought it was weird to have clark
steal clothes.besides, Clark trading clothes for service is funny
lighthearted, and it feels like something Superman would do.
Clark: thanks. (Hangs up and turns attention to the man and woman) thank you so much, is there anything I can do to repay you for the clothes?
Man: nah, I got it.
Woman: honey, don’t you need help painting the house today? I picked up the paint and everything this afternoon
Man: I can handle it sweetheart. Besides I’m sure mister Jim…. (Clark is gone).
The woman and man walk outside and can’t see him. The woman walks into the house
Woman: strangest man I’ve ever met.
Man: huh. You’re telling me
The house is painted.
Clark walks into town and straightens the jacket over his shoulders. He sees a school bus turn the corner and pass him.
Flashback bus scene
Clark is sitting with Lana on a bus seat. Clark and Lana are discussing some strange things that have happened on Lana’s parent’s property. A jock named Pete Ross nudges Clark
Pete: hey Kent! What did you think of the game?
Clark: sorry Pete, I don’t really get into sports that much
Pete: everyone watches football. What are ya Kent? Some kind of alien?
Lana: Pete, leave him alone.
Image result for clark lana pete ross
Pete Ross swore harder than anyone else in the movie.
the movie was rated PG-13 for "strong language" among other things.
these three are supposed to be really good friends and I feel like this scene will
set that up quite nicely for any future use.
Pete: I can’t see why you hang out with this dweeb all the time Lana. What are you his girlfriend or something? That makes you a dweeb too!
Clark: (stands. Pete is still way taller) you don’t get to talk to her like that!
Pete: oh yeah? Stop me!
Tire pops and the bus goes into the river. Clark pushes the bus out, jumps back into the lake and pulls Pete out as well. Pete looks up at Clark in shock, as does the rest of the kids on the bus.
Pets mom and is talking to the Kent parents while Clark sits on a rope swing outside. After hearing that what Clark did was an act of God, Clark runs over to the truck. Pa Kent sees this and walks over to him for a heart to heart chat.

Johnathan: Clark, We’ve talked about this. You can’t do these incredible things in public like this.
Clark: well what was I supposed to do? Just let them die?
Johnathan: No but… look there is more at stake here than you realize. Than I realize. (Clark sighs in exasperation). Come on, let’s go for a ride. (Johnathan then hops into the truck and Clark grudgingly gets into the passenger seat.
Clark and Johnathan drive to an empty field by the house.
Johnathan: I’m not exactly sure how to explain this, but you remember this field?
Clark: yeah, it’s the one you wouldn’t ever let me play in as a kid.
Johnathan: help me open this hatch.
the supportive Pa Kent seems to be missing in the movie
also he pretty much said it's ok for a bus full of kid die.
I inserted the reveal scene from "the man of steel" (1986)
and made Pa a bit more true to the form of a supportive dad.
Johnathan and Clark pull open a hatch in the ground and reveals a space ship. Clark s speechless as he looks around the ship’s hull
Johnathan: you know how some babies are found in baskets on porches? This was your basket. We were sure someone was going to show up at our doorstep. No one ever came.
Johnathan then proceeds to explain the command key that was found in the ship. Clark and Johnathan share a bonding father son moment.
Next we see Clark working at a truck stop/ bar in Canada. One of the patrons is harassing a waitress and Clark shows up to calmly stop him
Clark: excuse me. Can I help you?
Patron: buzz off man.
Clark: sir, I’m going to ask that you stop.
Patron: or what?
Clark: or… I’m going to ask you to leave.
The patron spits beer all over Clark then pours the rest of the bottle on him. Clark advances slightly but the waitress in question tells him that it’s not worth it. Clark goes into the back to tidy up. On his way he hears some Canadian military talking about a base that the Americans have and it’s rumored to be about an alien craft. Clark dries off. The patron leaves the bar and finds his truck totaled in the parking lot. Clark begins walking to the base.
We are now at the base. Enter Lois lane. She exits the helicopter and general Iling asks the new guy to carry Lois’ bags inside. The new guy is Clark. This is our first look at him at this base. Lois and Iling have an exchange trying to one up each other. Lois then says “alright, if you’re done with the oxymoronic military intelligence, show me what you’ve got”.  The general explains the lost ship having been encased in ice for several centuries. Lois spies Clark walking into the ship. We have an exchange with the robot thing and then Clark finds his father’s hologram. The history of Krypton is explained but not in the computer thing like we see in the movie. Clark actually gets a holographic full-room vision of krypton and see’s the history of it in rapid fire. A scream is heard down the hallway and Clark races off to investigate using his super speed. Jor-el’s eyes follow Clark as he races out the room.

Superman cauterizes Lois’ wound and demolishes the robot. Lois is dropped off and the ship flies away leaving everyone baffled as to how this happened.
