One of the classic movies that everyone needs to see in
their life time is the Princess Bride. To bring you up to speed on what this
theory includes, let’s give a quick recap on the movie
Girl (buttercup) lived on a farm. There was a farmhand named
Wesley that she eventually fell madly in love with. Wesley left to get money
before he and buttercup got married (get married anyway. The struggle for
survival could make your marriage stronger) but Wesley’s ship was attacked by
the dread pirate Roberts, who is famous for not taking prisoners. Later we find
out Wesley had taken on the identity of the dread pirate Roberts and had been
sailing on the ship for 5 years.
The problem comes when we consider what the dread prate Roberts
did in the past. There is a chance that in 5 years, Wesley had killed a lot of
people before he met buttercup. Is that true though?
Welcome to Theory Thursday
Pirate Roberts is a man who set up this legend around
himself. He eventually retired and passed on the identity to someone else. The
second passed it on to another person to another person and so on. We eventually
get to Wesley who says he will retire now that he has found buttercup. But not
just the captain would retire. It is mentioned that the entire crew would leave
and the new Roberts would set up a new crew with the old Roberts as first mate
to make sure the transition is smooth.
The question we have to ask is, did Wesley do any crazy
pirate stuff while he was Roberts?
"can't afford to make exceptions. one people find out a pirates gone soft then nobody listens and it's all work work work all the time." |
When Andre the giant, Inigo, and Wesley were having fun
storming the castle, they dressed Andre in a cloak and said he was “the dread
Pirate Roberts”. He was scary, but everyone was running away because they heard
that the dread pirate Roberts never takes prisoners. No survivor’s kind of
deal. So already Roberts’s legend is surrounded in mystery, but how did the
people hear about the no survivors deal if there are no survivors?
Remember that the entire crew changed with each pirate. They
likely spread the rumor that he was a savage killer, but then again, we also
know that Roberts has done business before, as prince Humperdinck promised
(like a politician) that he would send a letter to Roberts and run up the white
flag. Humperdinck is much more intelligent than we sometimes give him credit
for, and he would not have made a fake promise if the premise of it wasn’t
possible. That leads me to believe that Roberts never did claim to kill
everyone he came in contact with, just those who he was deliberately attacking.
How then could Roberts get rich? The way the mafia did it in
our world was they would set up a series of extra taxes that their clients had
to pay in order to go about their daily lives. For example, Roberts could tax
ships to sail in their waters, and with a reputation that Roberts took no
survivors in battle, people would have a very good reason to pay the tax. Then past
Roberts who have killed those who did not obey the rules and so Wesley likely
had no problems to face, especially since there wasn’t a war going on at the
time.
Also, Wesley was only captain for 2 years and a good chunk
of that was under the tutelage of the last Roberts.
So did Wesley kill anyone as the Dread Pirate Roberts my
answer is: Unlikely
What do you think? What’s your favorite line from the movie?
Don’t forget to share this with someone who takes their movies way too
seriously.
Have a great rest of your week.
