What is it to be spiritual?

On my mission I would meet a lot of people who would describe themselves as “spiritual, but not religious”. These are people who were usually disenchanted by the idea of an organized religion or they want to prove to themselves that they aren’t as far gone from God as they really are. One lady in particular would not come to a church building because she felt more spiritual in her back yard, so what is it to be spiritual?

light you obtain.

A lot of people define spiritual as a feeling rather than a state of being. You are spiritual if you have a strong connection with God. You build that connection by doing what he says. You gain trust from your parents when you obey house rules, and the same idea applies here.

Having a spiritual experience comes from having the light of Christ. The light of Christ is quite often called a conscience and lets us know what is right and what is wrong. These opposites allow for us to have the wide ranges of choices that we can make in a day. When we make right choices, our spiritual light can increase. With that increase of light, we gain an increase in knowledge, and with an increase in knowledge, we gain an increase in ability.

Becoming a spiritual person is directly linked to how much light you obtain. We gain light every time we obey a commandment or make the choice to follow the savior in all that he would have us do.  It seems that the level of light that you gain is also dependent on how serious you are about a certain activity. For example: you can read the scriptures and you will gain light from that activity, but if you apply the scriptures and try to find a real meaningful way to use them in your day to day life, you gain exponentially more light and knowledge.

When you make covenants, you are given more ability to understand the spirit. When baptized by the proper authority and in the right place, you are given the gift of the Holy Ghost through the laying on of hands. The Holy Ghost allows you to gain more light an knowledge from activities you are already doing, as well as unlock the ability to do more activities like taking the sacrament or entering the temple.

How do you become more spiritual? You do the things that bring more light into your world. Make covenants, continue to learn, build and rebuild.
