Saturday Showdown
This is one that has been on my mind for a while and
recently I re-watched Sleeping Beauty and had a bit of insight into the film
refreshed. So today I present:
Maleficent V. Jafar!
Maleficent:
First Appearance: Disney’s Sleeping Beauty (I can’t find any
earlier rendition of the story where she does appear)
Powers: mistress of all evil (according to her own words). Powers
are definitely of a supernatural origin.
First Appearance: 1001 nights I suppose.
Powers: “most powerful sorcerer in the world” at that time at
least. Power originates from cosmic energies emitted through the genie.
The Battle:
An ebony raven flew with hast towards an ominous castle in
the distance. The castle itself was separated from the rest of the world by a
large cliff. Within the inner court of the castle sat Maleficent. Her long
flowing black and purple train surrounded the floor around her throne as she
messaged her head. It’s hard for the mistress of all evil to find soldiers that
match her own intentions.
The raven perched itself on the edge of the armrest of the
throne. A few ‘caws’ and the message was clear.
“Really? A sorcerer to rival myself. Surely there must be
some mistake.” Maleficent began stroking her pet slowly along its back. “No one
is as powerful as me. I suppose I will have to simply go over there and put
this mage back in his proper place.”
The evil sorceress stood from her throne. A quick wave of
her hand and her magic staff materialized in front of her hands.
“By the powers of the evil one from afar, send me off to
the place known as Agrabah!” lightning clashed. A mighty wind filled the
chambers of the hall as Maleficent slowly disappeared into the empty air.
Agrabah. Jafar has finally achieved everything in life that
he ever wanted, except the girl of course, but that is small potatoes at this
point. Besides, the girl, Jasmine, was already feeding him grapes. He won.
Jafar had conquered. That’s when all the windows and doors flung open. A cold
and damp wind blew the flags, gold, and furniture around in a swirling tornado
that suddenly stopped. There in the middle of the room was Maleficent.
“What is the meaning of this?” shouted Jafar. The Sultan and
Jasmine ran from the room. Jafar could summon them back anytime anyway.
“So. You are the Jafar that I keep hearing things about. I
must say I’m rather disappointed. I was hoping for something a little more
impressive of the supposed ‘greatest sorcerer in the world’” teased Maleficent.
“You dare to insult me?” shouted Jafar once more. He reached
for his magic staff. The battle was on.
Bolts of purple and red lightning were flung across the room
at super speed, punching holes and knocking over pillars, nearly destroying the
palace. Both the raven and Iago at his point have turned into ty beanie babies
and the colors of the once magnificent palace had turned dark and deathly.
“I didn’t think this fight could be so dull.” Mentioned Jafar.
The sun went out. The palace was pitch black. A murderous chuckle was heard
throughout the halls as an eerie lime-green light grew where maleficent once
stood. A mighty dragon now stood in her spot.
“A lizard huh? Two people can play at that game…” Jafar
banged his staff on the ground in front of him. The snake shaped weapon molded
itself around Jafar as he grew into a monstrous snake.
The dragon slashed. The snake lunged. Both giant creatures
switched back and forth over who had the upper hand.
“You fool! Do you not realize your strength is finite to
this world only? While mine is eternal!” Maleficent in her dragon form grew to
outsize the palace. Green flames engulfed the city below leaving Jafar alone as
a snake in a garden.
“Genie! I desire to make my 3rd wish. I wish to
be an all-powerful genie!”
A beam of magic came from Jamar’s enslaved genie causing
Jafar to grow in size, staring down Maleficent at eye level, and then sinking
down and down into a black lamp on the ground. Maleficent dragon shrunk down
too into her human form. She picked up the lamp, laughed maniacally and disappeared
back to her castle
Conclusion:
While we don’t see either one outdo the other in the movies,
Maleficent does mention that her power is that of eternity and supernatural
sources while Jafar is bound to this world. Also I noticed that Jafar has a lot
more personal pride and greed issues while Maleficent is just a revenge
stricken villain. The winner is Maleficent.
Agree? Disagree? Let’s talk about it in the comments below
and don’t forget to share this article with someone who wishes that Disney went
forward with their plans for a “Villains” theme park.
