After the first Star Wars was released, there was a BBC radio production of the movie. Let’s talk about “Star Wars: The Original Radio Broadcast”
The broadcast not only faithfully follows the original movie, but expands on it. the writers of the radio show were able to get their hands on older drafts of the script, courtesy of George Lucas, and the radio show then allows us a deeper glimpse into aspects of the movie that were missing. We also get returning actors Mark Hamill and Anthony Daniels to come back and reprise their roles.
Why don’t I remember this?
A couple of reasons. The first is that it wasn’t aired a whole lot and when it was aired it only aired on BBC radio. The biggest reason for the obscurity is that this was released before several movies and aspects of the expanded universe were fleshed out, so many of the additions became retconned out of existence.
The show was very well received, however, the run time makes it hard to sit down and listen to the whole thing without making a big, long-running event out of it. there are 13 episodes and each episode is roughly 25 minutes long, even if you skip all of the credits.
Who would I recommend this too?
This series should almost exclusively stay with the big star wars fans rather than just the casual fans. Meaning: if you watch Youtube videos on Star Wars lore on a daily basis, or you go out of your way to read the comics and books, or if you pay specific attention to both the canon and legends parts of the universe, then you would find the show enjoyable.

Several things in the radio show feel weird and off to a casual fan. Han Solo has slightly different mannerisms, Darth Vader sounds completely different, and extended scenes at the beginning can slow down the pace of the story. However, this show was canon for a long time and it’s only in the radio show that you can see a bit more of Luke’s life on the moisture farm, his relationship with Biggs, how Princess Leia got the Death Star Plans (Alternative to Rogue One) and a very dark scene where we get to witness Leia’s interrogation at the hands of Darth Vader.
However, if you want to go deep into Star Wars Lore and want to appear smart when watching the movie with your friends, this is a pretty good place to go. Plus, it’s easy listening in the car.
Where can I find this?
The Internet Archive has the whole thing free to listen and download. You can also find select episodes on youtube, however, I have not been able to find the whole thing there. Follow this link to get to the place where I listened to it.
